The motivation behind this work is disruption. I want to take apart something we can all easily recognize. When you show someone an image that has a plant in it, the visual queues of color (green and brown etc.) shape and environment help us to identify the subject of the photo as a plant, even if it is one we have never seen before. I want to destroy that understanding—the understanding of what the natural world “should look like”—in the hopes of getting people to look past “what it is” literally, and think about what it could be. I want to take the natural world and make it unnatural. Or perhaps, I just want to make it a little less recognizable by taking pieces of nature and creating something new out of them.
