Alcoholism is an insidious disease - it slowly takes over every aspect of a person’s life and leaves devastating tears in relationships that span entire generations. My birth mother is an alcoholic. Wine mediated every relationship connected to her as well as our own. I have not seen her in almost three years and maintain very limited contact with her. Today, I have begun a recovery process to finally bring myself out of the trauma I learned as a child. Here I am photographing my true feelings and reactions to working out the past and the present, and showing how addiction can be experienced in many different ways, how lasting its impacts can be, but also how recovery is possible and achievable.
